Captains Log . The journey for a free good time. (Franki Chan Night Out)

It was a cold and miserable night for me i felt like i went threw hell these last couple days(literally i have) but anyways…, So me and the infamous Adam Warped decided to journey into the night to frolic amongst the red river crowd..crowd i say… i wish there was .. we arrived at the scene about 11ish thinking it would be packed to the gills, surprisingly there were like 3 or 4 people in the whole place. We both kinda scratched our heads and decided to hop to the next room of sex and alcohol.
As we entered the next room of pleasures, i was greeted by one of my favorite people at plush, John! (love this guy) anyways as i knocked down a couple of club sodas and heard a few beats from ram-z and crew we decided to head back to Barbarella(a young lady informed Adam that Frankis status on FB said he had landed and was on way) so naturally we headed back thinking it should have picked up.Well it didn’t, but none the less we saw one of our fav DJ, Simon, aka Prepmode and we started chatting him up to kill the time, there was a really good dj on called Hoddie Allen that was grinding it.. not bad not bad..
So as I’m in my usual position of staring at a screen and typing a way i look up and see no other than my Richard Henry and Franki Chan enter the building, amongst other . So i naturally greeted my homie Richard and said a quick hello to Franki and informed him that the interview that we had done before hand at beauty bar was basically no good cause the mic was bad, but we did transcribe it as best as we could ..(seems like i went threw hell trying to get an interview with Franki i even had a person in LA but the film guy flaked on us,,,, ugg so embarrassing .. anyways as he got on the decks more people started to com in and it started to actually fill up a bit.. over all it cheered up my night and Franki threw down some nice beats.. and the crowd was small and intimate couldn’t have asked for a better night to put a smile on my face..
2 thumbs up for Barbarella and Franki Chan!

Punisher Biography
| Real name / | Michelle Herrmann |
| Moniker(s) / | punisher (detroit) |
Hailing from Detroit, Michelle Herrmann better know as just Punisher, is a petite techno veteran that packs a powerful punch. An observer and artist by nature, Michelle was drawn to music and the creative side of life since the beginning. She was fortunate to find her way into the Detroit techno scene in the early 90’s when the energy was awe inspiring, and from that moment Punisher emerged. From her career’s onset in 1993 at only 15 years old, Michelle has set a precedent of raising the bar high for all things Punisher through flawless productions and dance floor igniting DJ and live PA sets.
Very early on Michelle realized that being a DJ alone would not be enough to contain her artistic creativity and prowess. Trying to get closer to the music and release the sounds within, Michelle purchased some drum machines and was on her way to the next level. In 1996 and 1997, within a few years of learning the science of the synths, Punisher put out her first two twelve inch EPs on Sean Deason’s Detroit based label Matrix Records. Seeking to push forth the concepts of sound and motion, in 1998 she launched the seminal Detroit label, Seismic Records in addition to her collaboration with legendary producer Mark Gage of Vapourspace. The label quickly gained much critical respect with collaborations from many world renowned producers. Seismic has seen releases from the likes of the Advent, Bryan Zentz, and Andrei Morant. Through licensing by Dave Clarke, Bill Nasty and others, Seismic had become a strong international techno label.
This thing we refer to as “techno” is limitless and over the years as technology has prevailed the music has evolved. Punisher’s style has progressed and grown along with the industry as if connected to a part of “techno” as a whole. Michelle’s musical creativity is currently being propelled into her latest undertaking – the founding of new label, Hej Records – with John Overfiend. Hej was founded with a vision: ‘making a mark in the evolution of musical energy’. Hej’s premiere EP in 2007 entitled “Enter The Hej” with tracks by Punisher and Dave Powers, is a release emphasizing the innovative and energetic flavor of the label. Hej will put forth an onslaught of both vinyl and net tracks from a wide range of International and Midwestern talent. Punisher’s music has also landed her upcoming immediate releases and remixes for Prosthetic Pressings, Klectik, Blank Code, Cryovac, and of course Hej.
To back the momentum of her constant stream of releases, Punisher travels the world, djing and performing live PA sets on an array of machines. The recent Hej tour took her to Miami for WMC, South America where she represented Detroit at the Monte Mapu festival and famed afters of Ricardo Villalobos, Dominica 54, and a headlining spot at Detroit’s 2008 DEMF Movement festival. Within seconds she can hypnotize a crowd, her sound, a unique blend of exotic techno, sassy funk, and electric driving beats, has resonated on dance floors from the United States to Canada, Europe and Latin America. Michelle has literally pummeled walls of sound alongside artists such as Pascal F.E.O.S., Adam Beyer, Joel Mull, Marco Carola, Ben Sims, Alex Under, and countless others, next time it could be you

An Interview With Richard Henry
Richard Henry Interview from POSR on Vimeo.
illson:
we’re here at House Wine on 408 Josephine to talk with a local scenester in the Austin music scene. Now people say that Austin is the music capital of the world. That’s so because of the work of these people. His name’s Richard Henry, and we’re going to ask him a handful of questions so that you get to know him a little better.
So, Richard Henry – in what way do you contribute to Austin’s music scene?
RH:
Ummm, I book a bunch of shows in town, usually talent-scouting around looking for new things that people will like – stuff that I listen to in my ipod – new music – and just bringing in new music from other cities into town and also doing the same exact thing … exporting and importing basically music. It’s kind of like coffee, but with music.
illson:
Do you have a production company, or a promo company, or anything we can recognize by name?
RH:
Yeah, I have this promotional company called Platypus Promotions. It kind of happpened by default, like everything else I do, and just had to create something to be more ‘professional,’ and it’s pretty much caters to everything, like all kinds of different genres of music. Umm, it’s everything ’cause a platypus is a little bit of everything. So is the company, its A & R … it’s different stuff. I don’t know how to explain it. It deals with reggae, umm … hip-hop, rap, umm … street music, dance music, umm … punk rock, rock. Pretty much everything that tickles my ear.
illson:
Do you still like music?
RH:
Absolutely NO! No, I love music. I’ve been into music since I was like a kid kicking it in my mom’s womb – to the beat, ‘woom buncha boom’ – so I’m a pretty big fan.
illson:
Any particular bands that you’re really into right now?
RH:
Umm … actually, yeah, there’s a few bands. There’s a band I found that out plays across my street. There called the Hex Dispensers. They’re really good. They’re garage, punk rock style. Another band is Fingaar Bangaar. They’re amazing. They’re part of Insect Records, by Butcher Bear & Charlie. They’re pretty good. And … I don’t know. That’s about it for local type bands and stuff.
illson:
Aside from money, what other essential traits should a promoter have?
RH:
You should do it because you like it. You shouldn’t do it just for the money. If you’re doing it for the limelight, (or) being on the cover of some local ‘zine or something like that, you’re doing it for the wrong reasons… Basically what I’m trying to say is that basically you shouldn’t mind about the money because the money will come if you stick with it, and just stick with something you like doing, because nobody wants to work a nine to five job. Fuck that.
illson:
What has been your creative outlet as of late?
RH:
My dj’ing. I used to be in a band a long time ago. We broke up. (So) Dj’ing. Trying to get into music production, and trying to recreate kind of like, uh … I don’t know how to explain it. Kind of like a garage type sounding music right now, I’m working on. And that’s basically how I got the promotion company. I have to create posters and all that stuff, and help people out of situations – so I could buy more gear. Basically that’s how I ended up (with it), by default. That’s pretty much it right now.
illson:
Finally, Seth Rogen or Bill Murray?
RH:
Bill Murray!
illson:
Allright. that’s one hot minute with Richard Henry of Platypus Productions. Keep an eye out for his work in the city and say hello when you see him. Thanks, Richard.
RH:
Platypus Promotions!
illson:
Platypus Promotions. Thank you, Richard.
RH:
You’re welcome.

Having been recently hit hard by a heavy dose of serious heartache I retreated back to my musical youth. Back to a time when I was always depressed and angsty. You remember the time, those terribly depressing tween age years. During this part our lives most of us (well musicians and music lovers anyways) seem to find some solace in the music and it stays emotionally attached to us throughout the rest of our lives. Hence, I’m stoked to say that my “80′sDepressionSession” mixtape is finally in the bag! This mix features soul soothing tunes from Jesus and Mary Chain, The Cure, Billy Idol, Eurythmics, Berlin, A Flock of Seagulls, Culture Club, Paul Young, John Waite, & Lionel Richie. All of these songs helped me ease the pain back in the day and still never fail to cheer me right up. Honestly I must admit that some of them still even give me the chills. Anyways catharsis attained! Thanks for listening!

Well it was fri and me and Sicca were feening for something to do.. already Post Op and appeased by the new york bagel gods, we were going to meet up with Adam Warped and Chris Casual to go to Hercules And Love Affair but we decided to go out and about with our very uber hip friend / business associate /manager and over most of all awesome guy.. Traey Hatch .. He told us that we should come check out this band XX and meet up with our new found friend Myles Grosovsky of Sneak Attack Media
well anyyywaysssss… enough of the name dropping and tag indexing lets move back to the story at hand..
So we get on the subway (Imagine That) and head toward the hotel. and arrive greeted by yer typical are you on the list douche bag to tell us that we were at the wrong place. So 2 block later we arrived to smiling faces that greeted and checked if we were on the list and so we entered the beautiful but yet to be packed hotel.
As we walked down the stairs we heard the oh familiar but faint sounds of a DJ coming form downstairs, im assuming it was in the basement of the hotel but what the hell do i know. So after Sicca decided to get her 17 dollar glass of wine in a plastic cup we decided to hit the dance floor. it was packed but not yet to packed and it was a little odd cause the music wasn’t up very loud.. So after all that it start`ed to fill up more and more and more.. and it wouldn’t stop. So naturally the music became louder which i might add there was a Dj Tag team That caught my ear playing Indie dance To Electro to Disco There names were Dave And Josh Of Fixed NYC so after a few waddles on the dance floor i naturally had to pee right when the place was filled but on my way to the pisser low and behold whom did i see could this be ….
Yes YES yeS it was! it was Penelope Of The Golden FilterI felt like a school boy telling her how im such a big hugeee fan.. hahha what can ya do when i like something i like something.. anyways so back to the floor and we met up with miles chatted for a tad and the dj music turned down and the band XX started to come on..
YOU COULD BARLEY HEAR THEM… as we all looked in astonishment as how they turned off all the speakers in the back and only the staeg speakers we became quite restless. i liked what i heard but just couldn’t hear it very well so we decided to make like a banana and split!..
On my way out the facilities i was greeted again by Penelope and Stephen of The Golden Filter so naturally asked them when they were coing back to Austin they said probably SXSW. So i said goodbyes and we wandered off into the Manhattan night all in one piece.
THE END
P.S. so Chris Casual and Adam Warped were dancing the night away with trannys!
UGGG i would have paid to see this! Jealous!

MAPS – Turning the Mind (Chris Casual’s review)
September 16, 2009 by chriscasual
The new maps album, Turning the Mind, is definitely not to be missed. It has the dark, drug rock feel of an early to mid career Spiritualized record – organs and all! However, it never feels too heavy or bogged down. It’s quite the opposite; with uplifting vocals, chord progressions, and strings, as heard on “I Dream of Crystal”, it is connotative to that of the polyphonic spree in it’s many moments of glee and ecstasy. It’s as if James Chapman, the man behind Maps, is killing himself in his pursuit of happiness; there is even a track entitled “Die Happy Die Smiling”. There are intense minimalist moments, such as the opening of “nothing” that make me want to cry like a Muse song sometimes makes me want to cry; but then Maps drops a nice beat with plenty of interesting, and sometimes dirty, synths to make me feel like dancing… and maybe crying and laughing too.
So many emotions come and go as I listen to Turning the Mind, but boredom is never one of them. It is a very cohesive work, which I never found any tracks that are there just as “fluff” or “fillers” in. The project has conquered one very big quality that I look for in music: two opposing sounds working synergistically to create something familiar yet so new that you can’t quite put your finger on why you love it so much. Turning the Mind is both dark and uplifting. It leaves me feeling warm with a tinge of cold shudders, like I just got home safely from a long, harrowing journey. This is an LP full of gems that I definitely recommend digging up.
Illson’s Manifesto

Friends, Lovers, Soldiers
It’s time to unleash the sound my cohorts DJ Jake Childs, DJ Chris Casual, DJ Adam Warped and yours truly DJ illson have been stewing and brewing and smoking and spicing, twisting and beating and basting, tasted and cooled off and DONE. We are here for your listening pleasure, to feed your ear mouths with the adventurous cuisine of our skittish sonics.
ON WHAT WE FEEL IS EMERGING
The new wave of techno – the sound of digital decay, of a primal scream, of dirty booming bass lines made by striking strings with skin, of snarling guitars inciting cynical singing, the struggle against the safety of comfort, luxury, familiarity – the new wave of techno is the sound of a scuffle between passion and mechanization, a struggle between flawed humans and relentlessly perfect machinery. The new wave will show that the future’s hope is the broken machine – THE HACKED FACTORY – where inputs are transformed, by mysterious and ambitious algorithms, patches authored and added by your console jockey friends from Iceland, Taiwan, The Philippines, Peoria, Detroit, and defectors from the Rand Corporation and MIT Artificial Intelligence lab, plugging in pipes and routing process in self-reflexive ways, make a mantra of impracticality, alert to the possibility of the mysterious, whose corporate culture is centered on leaping into spaces which have no numbers, astronauts in the digital cosmos, this spirit turned into THINGS that are then are disgorged into the undying assembly line, never stopping, never sleeping, metallic river of OBJECTS – the mechanized flow that makes a mockery of rivers and REAL flow – the relentless clack of the moving line which carries the Children of this New Wave, the offspring of the Hacked Factory, whose souls are pretzels of mathematics, whose essence are undecipherable lists of Ones and Zeros – - designed infants, Frankenstein beauty pageant pre-schoolers running on buggy software, robotic dogs from Tokyo who want to eat their masters, wood chippers with dreams of bonsai, schoolteachers with unnameable hungers, blondes with big blue eyes and and sugar daddies, men with minds that love blossoms of flames and the smell of fuel – The new wave of techno is the song of busted and hacked boxes and gadgets and the song of the discontented users of tech and of the instruments that make them strong, that help them truly LIVE – all spliced and soldered together into the binary switch called POSR. Faced with your new toy, do you switch it ON, or do you switch it OFF?
Help us test our device by throwing the switch. For light, or for darkness.
POSR – Digital Hardcore – the sound of recycled broken beat machines, of passionate bass players, of pissed off singers -
the sound of humans throwing their horrors to the flame of this newly birthed sound. We play the songs of the souls of machines, of their struggle with life, and their struggle with us.
POSR is the sound of the Uneasy Interface, of poor ergonomics. POSR is the sound of crude cyborgs, of hacks and improvised fixes, of synthetic celebrities and sampled melodies and chats gone bad.
POSR is a mountain song to the GreatCircuit, its disconnectedness, its cautious connections, its connections creations, its assemblies, and its annihilation of it all.
POSR is finally just a crude Metroelectronomic organic music interface – designed for human use,
The sigh of the ghost in the Machine. A tone. An alarm. A bleep.

Alec Empire – Past – Present – Future
June 29, 2009 by GEØ!
From ear’s roots in punk, hip hop, and rave, this music and sound maker has produced sounds in the ambient, minimal, musique concrete, industrial, electro-punk, techno, and jungle areas. At times even straight up rock ‘n’ roll has been heard. Covering such vast genres of musical endeavors is Alec Empire.
As I pull out my first Atari Teenage Riot album, “Burn, Berlin, Burn,” I remember why it interested my ears. The sound was brutal, yet it disturbed my ears in a good way. A lot of sounds coming out during that time (’96) were very pretty and sweet. It was refreshing to listen to an album which didn’t adhere to what was being spat out like the usual suspects all around. I thank Alec Empire and ATR for bringing this about. ATR were controversial and “in your face” along the later industrial veins of Throbbing Gristle and SPK. ATR reigned hardcore supreme from ’93-2001 with live recordings and remixes still being issued.
Alec as a single entity has pursued many musical interests since his beginnings. His own Digital Hardcore Recordings (DHR) label has had many releases of digital hardcore psychosis and even spawned a deal with the Beastie Boy’s Grand Royal record label. Empire’s musical endeavors have been on Force Inc and their sub label Mille Plateaux as well as many others. He has also done remixes for diverse artists ranging from Coil to Bjork and others everywhere in between. With that having been said, the diversity is abounding. If that’s not a warning as to Empire’s uniqueness, I suggest you dig deeper and have a listen for yourself.
Around 2007, Empire set his attention towards his new label “Eat Your Heart Out (EYHO).” He has since left DHR to the more underground ventures in sound. Empire describes EYHO as the “new sound of Berlin.” That definitely catches my attention as it should yours.
With hard edged beats, industrially linked at many times, and metallic percussion, this new “Berlin” sound has it coming strong. Empire’s vocals, full of distortion and reverb, seep and drill into your ears. There are even whispers abound. Numan-esque keys and chords are a pleasant surprise amidst the fury of sharp beats and guitar induced electronic rhythms. The distortion screeches and wails. Bleeps, arpeggiators, and metallic percussion strike you like a whip. The basslines pulse and pull you in. Empire’s voice screams and whispers at you. His music literally digs into your skin, yet holds delicate areas in songs to reassure there isn’t one set standard to his form of creativity.
Alec Empire is a true DIY guy in both ideals and philosophy. He has defined a genre and subculture on his own and with those he has worked with. His live shows are to be witnessed, both on and off the stage, for his recorded material still has that “live” energy. Empire is a force to be reckoned with, both past and present. With this being said I recommend “The Golden Foretaste of Heaven” (’07) and “Shivers,” his latest release. If you give him a listen you’ll find a space to breathe amongst the nonsense of pop and all the mundane sounds you are subjected to.

By far this was one of the most memorable shows to me this year because every track rocked ! Chris Casual early this month had hipped me on to them but i really hadn’t payed much attention until 2 weeks ago . To me there like 20 20 vision meets Siouxie reminded me allot of Random Factors earlier stuff and 2020 visons sound (that they so strayed away from
but with an updated twist!
